Several years ago a good friend of mine started me out with my first Bones figures which included many Giant Rats. I have four trios of the same giant rats. My plan is to paint a few as sewer rats, and then I plan to paint some of them as hooded rats of various colors similar to our pet rats. I’ll be updating this post as I continue to work on the first three Giant Rats.
The base coat is done and next I’ll be using the wash and applying the layers/dry brushing.
- Ears and tail – Citadel Emperor’s Children
- Black for base and eyes – Reaper Solid Black (29843)
- Gray coat – Reaper Ash Gray (29833)

I applied the final layers and a wash.
- Ears and Tail – I layered them with a mix of Citadel’s Emperor’s Children and Reaper’s Elf Flesh (29850)
- Gray Coat – First I used a wash of Citadel’s Agrax Earthshade (and waited 30 minutes for the wash to dry) and then I dry brushed the coat with a mix of Reaper’s Dragon White and Ash Gray (29833).
- I added Citadel’s technical paint, Nurgle’s Rot to the base to create a “Green Slime” sewer sludge effect.
In the end I should have taken more time to be more precise with my painting on the ears and tail and I let the gray dry brushing cover them too much. I am very pleased with the green slime effect with the Nurgle’s Rot. The pink effect on the tail looks well, and I think the simple gray texture works for a table top distance figure. Also, the washes make a big difference in creating a sense of depth and texture on the figures. It is all a process and I learn a bit more with each figure I paint. I posted the brushes I used on the right.
